How does Fiber Optic lighting work?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes) Fiber optic lighting has 3 main components:
  1. The illuminator or light source.
  2. The fiber optic cable.
  3. Optional light fixtures.

The fiber acrylic optic cable is used to transmit the light to each of the fixtures.    The light goes from the light source through the fiber optic cable to the various light fixtures.    The fiber optic cable is placed in a retainer strip that goes around the edge of the pool to produce perimeter lighting.

What type of fiber optic lighting is available?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes)
  1. Perimeter Lighting - Highlights the lines of your pool or spa.
  2. Lens Lighting - Underwater flood or spot lighting.
  3. Feature Lighting - Accentuates features such as waterfalls and step risers.
  4. Path Lighting - Defines and enhances walkways.
  5. Accent Lighting - Flexible lighting to exactly enhance landscape features or waterfalls.

What are the advantages of Fiber Optic Lighting.

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes)
  1. There is no electricity in the pool.
  2. Save energy
  3. By changing colors the mood can be changed easily.
  4. The fiber optic light is durable.
  5. Fiber optic lighting can be used for underwater, the pool perimeter, and garden lighting.

How do I make  a rough estimate of what fiber optic lighting for my pool will cost?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes)
  1. Decide which illuminator you wish to purchase and decide where you want to locate the illuminator.
  2. When measuring the fiber optic cable allow an additional 18" at the light source for connections.
  3. Perimeter lighting can be done with a 21 or 40 strand cable.   We prefer to use the 40 strand cable.   Take the measurement from the illuminator to the pool, around the perimeter of the pool and then back to the iluminator.    That will give you the length of 21 or 40 strand cable that you have to purchase.
  4. Decide how many lights you will want on the pool wall.   Measure from the illuminator to the location of the underwater light assemblies.  ( Normally two lights for a smaller pool and three for a larger pool).    You can use 80 strand or 150 strand cable for the underwater light.   This measurement is not a loop but a one way measurement.   Each light must have its own cable from the illuminator.   Be sure to allow for dips in the ground.    As well,  the light is located about  8" - 20" from the top of the water.    The 150 strand cable will give you a brighter light and as well allow 6" of extra fiber optic cable at the pool light.
  5. Add up the price of the illuminator, perimeter cable, underwater light assemby (one for each light), and cable for each light assembly.   That will give you the total cost for your system delivered to your door.

What colors does the Hayward SuperVision come with?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes) The SuperVision colors are brilliant white, hot pink, lime green, royal blue, optic yellow, aqua turquoise, tangerine orange, and colbalt blue.

How do I calculate the cost of garden lighting?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes)
  1. Twelve strand cable is used in garden lighting.   Each garden light requires a cable running from the illuminator to the garden acrylic rod.    Decide how many acrylic rods you are going to install and add up the total footage required for 12 strand cable.
  2. Decide which acrylic lighting you are going to use and how many and that will give you the cost of the lighting.

What is meant by a 500 Strand Illuminator or light source?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes) The 500 strand illuminator means that it will take 500 strands of fiber optic cable.

How do calculate how many strands I need for a typical installation?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes)
  1. A 500 strand illuminator can take 500 strands of fiber optic cable.     A 150 strand cable has 150 strands of fiber optic cable .    An example of an installation would be as follows:
  2. Put two 150 strand lights for underwater lighting and that would leave you   200 strands 500 - (150 x 2) = 200) for perimeter lighting and garden lighting.
  3. Use 40 strand lighting for the pool perimeter lighting.  The 40 strand cable would start at the illuminator, go around the pool and then back to the illuminator.    That would be another 80 strands used (40 out and 40 back).
  4. That would leave 120 strands for garden lighting.   You would be able to put in 10 garden lights (120 divided by 12 = 10).
  5. If you wanted more garden lights or an extra pool light,  less strands can be used in the underwater lights (instead of 150 use 100 strands of the 150 strands, or use an 80 strand cable).
  6. Allow 18" of additional cable at the light source.

Can fiber optic cable be spliced?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes) No, that is why it is important to measure carefully.

When I install my fiber optic lighting can I just lay the cable in a trench or do I have to put the cable in a conduit?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes) The cable should be put into a conduit.   PVC piping makes an ideal conduit.

Which side of the pool should I install the under water lights?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes) The underwater lights should point away from the sitting area.

Does the color of the pool make a difference in the effect of the fiber optic lighting?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes) Yes, the darker the pool the more fibers you should use for the underwater lighting.

Will you make a plan showing where the fiber optic lighting should go?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes) Yes, we would be pleased to -  Hayward offers a fiber optic design consultation service.   Please provide the following information:
  1. Pool dimensions.
  2. Pool finish and color.
  3. We need a plan of your yard showing the pool, sitting areas and any garden lighting that you would like included.   The drawing should  be to scale.
  4. Show the proposed  location of the illuminator or light source.
  5. Describe lighting types desired.
  6. The estimate would be based on estimated cable.   It would be necessary for you to confirm the type and amount of cable required.

What is the maximum strand capacity of each light assembly?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes) Three hundred strands.

How close can I place the illuminator to the pool?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes) The illuminator should be no less than 10' from the water surface but you can put it as close as 5' if there is a barrier.   Always consult your local building codes and installation guide.

Where do I mount the lens assembly in a spa?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes) Mount spa lenses in the foot well.

What is the maximum allowed length of fiber optic cable in an installation?

HH01515A.gif (970 bytes) The maximum length of cable is 200'.   When calculating perimeter lighting the length is calculated from the light source (illuminator) to the pool, around the pool and back to the light source.
